pretend

Sometimes it is fun to pretend that I could be an aerial photographer. Tulsa is so pretty at night.  Maybe next time I should take my Cannon instead of just my little iPhone.

Flying in the dark was fun. A tailwind sure makes you get places a whole lot faster!

Flying Solo

My husband is going to school to be a professional pilot. Which is really cool and he has spent a lot of time in an airplane this semester. Well last week was his first solo flight. Yes, thank you Oklahoma weather for finally cooperating a letting this happen. Mike is achieving amazing things towards his goals and life and here is one of the first big steps. A amazing bright future is in store for both of us.

For Mike’s first solo flight he had to take off and land three times with his instructor, Lucas. Then he had to do three take offs, fly a traffic pattern, and then land 3 times by himself. Here are some pretty cool pictures of it. I wish I could have been there, but thank goodness Mike’s dad was there to take some pictures and videotape some of the landings.

In American aviation, the traditional removal of a new pilot’s shirt tail is a sign of the instructor’s new confidence in his student, after successful completion of the 1st solo flight. In the days of tandem trainers, the student sat in the front seat, with the instructor behind. As there were often no radios in these early days of aviation, the instructor would tug on the student pilot’s shirttail to get his attention, and then yell in his ear. A successful first solo flight is an indication that the student can fly without the instructor. Hence, there is no longer a need for the shirt tail, and it is cut off by the proud instructor, and sometimes displayed as a trophy.
